Even more little things to help your chess game
Yes, I made another one Article “Little Things” (highlighting IM Cyrus Lakdawala again).
Why another? Because I think it’s very instructive. See (and understand) a ton of them and your chess IQ should skyrocket.
Again, I give you five more riddles. And, again, do your best to solve them. Then look at the many notes hiding behind the board. As always, if you can’t solve them, ADJUST that little “?” score and all the goodies will fall at your feet.
PUZZLE ONE
The sound of the black knights snapping
PUZZLE TWO
Principles by Lakdawala
Cyrus gives us principles:
- When the opponent has the pair of bishops, exchange one of them.
- Black’s king will be much safer with the removal of white’s best minor piece.
- White is likely to end up with a bishop who recalls slightly badly.
PUZZLE THREE
You are the creator
Black has two bishops against White’s bishop and knight, so Cyrus wants to find a way to make the bishops more active. The answer is simple and strong.
PUZZLE FOUR
Never tell yourself that you can’t
White has a good position, and he played 14.Rfd1, which is a perfectly correct move (White eventually won). BUT…there was another idea that was even better.
PUZZLE FIVE
Make optimal use of what you have
It looks like White has a strong attack. What would you do if you had the black pieces?
